The 2023 World Baseball Classic is back. The event returned for the first time in six years on Tuesday night (well, technically Wednesday morning) as the Netherlands beat Cuba in the opener. The Netherlands got off to a 2-0 start, as Xander Bogaerts and Co. beat Panama in their second match. Shohei Ohtani and Japan started their tournament Thursday, with Ohtani starting pitcher and also had two hits in an 8-1 win over China. Japan followed that victory with a 13-4 loss to Korea on Friday and clinched a place in the quarter-finals with a 10-2 win over the Czech Republic on Saturday. Korea are now down 0-2 after being beaten by Australia earlier in the week.
Panama shut out Italy on Saturday night in a must-win game while Australia edged China 12-2. The United States team begins Saturday night’s pool game against Great Britain.
This WBC version was originally scheduled to be played in 2021 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The action begins Wednesday, March 8 (technically, the first pitch of the 2023 WBC Taiwan Open will be at 11 p.m. ET on March 7), and there will be a total of 47 matches. The championship game is scheduled for Tuesday, March 21 in Miami.
