Who is Hana Kurusu in Jujutsu Kaisen? Explain

Jujutsu Kaisen’s Culling Game arc is full of new characters, and Hana Kurusu is one of the most mysterious of the bunch. Introduced with minimal backstory and shown in few chapters before joining the main group, the significance to the larger plot is hazy at best. A few major reveals made it worth knowing, and to that end, we’ve created this guide to answer the question: Who is Hana Kurusu in Jujutsu Kaisenand why is it important?

Jujutsu Kaisen’s Hana Kurusu: Identity and Powers Explained

Simply put, Hana Kurusu is a member of the Culling Game who carries one of the most powerful cursed techniques in Jujutsu Kaisen.

She is possessed by the Devil Angel the same way Yuji Itadori is possessed by Sukuna. Unlike Sukuna however, the Angel Cursed Spirit does not actively wish Hana harm and seeks to live in symbiosis with her. In exchange, he only wants Hana to help him find Sukuna so he can kill the Curse King for good.

To that end, it allows her to use her Cursed Technique at will, which grants Hana the ability to nullify any other Cursed Techniques she comes in contact with. This holds true no matter how powerful the technique, and essentially means that she can safely face anything thrown at her by Jujutsu curses and wizards.

Why does Hana want to help Itadori and Megumi?

This is all pretty clear, but the reason Hana herself agrees to help Itadori and Megumi with their plans has a specific driving force behind it.

In Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 210, it is revealed that Hana was saved by Megumi when the two were children. After being lured into the lair of a cursed spirit, Megumi managed to lead her to safety using her white divine dog. She was later found by the authorities and able to lead a normal life, although Megumi never asked her for thanks or money back.

As a result, Hana holds Megumi responsible for the life she was able to lead and sought to help people in hopes that it would bring them together again. This remained true after the Culling Game began, and she specifically sought him out in order to use his new powers to help him achieve his goals.

Does Megumi remember saving Hana in Jujutsu Kaisen?

That said, another question remains unanswered: does Megumi remember saving Hana in Jujutsu Kaisen?

As it stands, there is no definitive answer. It could be due to their young age when he saved her, or it could be due to a plot twist that has yet to be revealed. It could also be something that was confirmed outside of the illustrated story, just inferring that Megumi remembers her and agreed to enlist her help as a result.

Pretty much the only sign we have of him remembering her is when Sukuna uses her affection for him to draw him in and attempt to kill her. It is unclear if this is simply something he noticed while living in Itadori, or if he learned of his past with Megumi by digging through Megumi’s memories.

Does Hana Kurusu die in Jujutsu Kaisen?

Finally, there is the most important question regarding a character in the series: does Hana Kurusu die in Jujutsu Kaisen?

We still can’t say for sure, but things don’t look good for her. After being lured close to Sukuna in Chapter 213, she is shown hugging what she believes to be Megumi as Sukuna prepares to tear her apart with an enlarged head and jaws. Another character may arrive to save her in time, but she might as well be knocked out and removed from the game permanently.

We’ll have to wait and see, as there are still chapters that haven’t been released yet.
