The 2023 World Baseball Classic is underway as 20 teams vie for the international title. Japan and Shohei Ohtani fought their way to the quarter-finals with victory over the Czech Republic on Saturday, while promotion to the Netherlands in the next round will have to wait after losing to Chinese Taipei. Colombia beat Mexico in extras on Saturday and the stars of Puerto Rico beat Nicaragua. Venezuela surprised the Dominican Republic 5-1. Team USA, which is looking to defend its title after winning it all in 2017, started with a 6-2 victory on Saturday against Great Britain in Phoenix.

The group of 20 teams will be reduced to eight after the pool match, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the quarter-finals. From there, it’s a single-elimination bracket-style tournament with the championship game scheduled for Tuesday, March 21 in Miami.
